Project: Poverty
HDRC Surrey Team
A mixed-methods study examining poverty among priority populations in Surrey, published in January 2026 by the NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) Surrey. Drawing on focus groups, a community survey, and an evidence review, the research found that stigma, complex application processes, and restrictive eligibility criteria prevent many residents from accessing available support, with food insecurity the most widespread form of hardship. The report recommends developing a cross-Surrey Strategic Poverty Framework spanning health, housing, employment and education, alongside simpler service access, trauma-informed approaches, and stronger community co-production.
