HDRC Surrey is a collaboration between Surrey County Council, the University of Surrey, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, and partners within the community and voluntary sectors including Good Company and Surrey Minority Ethnic Forum (SMEF).

Surrey County Council serves over 1.2 million residents across the county of Surrey. As the upper-tier authority in a two-tier system, it handles strategic county-wide responsibilities. It is responsible for a wide range of strategic services for the county, including education, social care, transport, public health, and waste disposal. It also oversees libraries, fire and rescue services, and strategic planning. Working alongside district and borough councils, Surrey County Council plays a vital role in shaping the county’s future and supporting its communities.

The University of Surrey is a leading public research institution located in Guildford, serving a diverse student population of over 16,000. Renowned for its strengths in science, engineering, health, and business, the university combines academic excellence with a strong focus on employability and innovation. It plays a key role in regional development through research partnerships, enterprise initiatives, and community engagement, contributing to both local and global progress.

Reigate & Banstead Borough Council is one of eleven districts and boroughs within Surrey. It serves a population of over 150,000 residents and covers towns including Reigate, Redhill, Horley, and Banstead. The Council is committed to enabling its communities to thrive and providing support for those in need.

Good Company is a charity working to prevent and alleviate poverty in East Surrey. Its mission is to lead our community towards a poverty-free future, while supporting those who need our help.

Surrey Minority Ethnic Forum (SMEF) works with over 80 community, faith, and belief organisations to enhance the lives of ethnic minority and disadvantaged people, bridge gaps in service provision, address racial discrimination, and bring people of different backgrounds together for a more integrated county.
The NIHR Health Determinants Research Collaboration (HDRC) Surrey is part of the NIHR and hosted by Surrey County Council.
The NIHR is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research.
Working in partnership with the NHS, universities, local government, other research funders, patients and the public – we fund, enable and deliver world-leading health and social care research that improves people’s health and wellbeing and promotes economic growth.
We are also a major funder of applied health research in low- and middle-income countries, work that is principally funded through UK government international development funding.
The mission of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research. NIHR do this by:
- Funding high quality, timely research that benefits the NHS, public health and social care;
- Investing in world-class expertise, facilities and a skilled delivery workforce to translate discoveries into improved treatments and services;
- Partnering with patients, service users, carers and communities, improving the relevance, quality and impact of our research;
- Attracting, training and supporting the best researchers to tackle complex health and social care challenges;
- Collaborating with other public funders, charities and industry to help shape a cohesive and globally competitive research system;
- Funding applied global health research and training to meet the needs of the poorest people in low- and middle-income countries.
